The first time
I saw eyelets added to a page was in Creating Keepsakes scrapbook
magazine. Creative editor, Becky Higgins, had once again opened
a new door into the scrapbooking realm. She had created a gorgeous
title on vellum and attached the title to the layout with silver
eyelets. It was a great concept, but one I swore I would never try.
It just looked too complicated. It wasn't long, however, before
I was given the assignment to create a title using eyelets. So,
I tried. I will be the first to admit it turned out great. The additions
the eyelets made to the title were simple, yet stunning. Having
found a new love for the technique I decided to try it out on everything;
journaling, photo mattes, punches, borders etc. I soon discovered
they look great on "everything". You too may have decided
not to use eyelets or are hesitant to try, but after you see what
a great addition they are you will soon change your mind.
When adding
an eyelet you need the following tools: A self-healing mat, an anywhere
hole punch (the same size as the eyelet), an eyelet setter and a
hammer. Check that you are working on a stable surface (I find that
the middle of my work table seems to have more give, so I usually
work directly over the legs of the table).
Determine the
placement of the eyelet and mark it with a pencil if needed. Using
the hammer and the anywhere hole punch create the hole in your item.
Place the eyelet on the matte, right side down and place your item
right side down onto the eyelet. Using the setter and the hammer
to set the eyelet. This process takes seconds and creates fantastic
embellishments.

For
titles:
Adding eyelets to the letters rather than cutting out the
centers allows you to add more color. For example, "The
garden" title is cut out of pink pattern paper and mounted
on a lighter shade of pink. The eyelets added to the letters
are a darker shade of pink. The colors compliment each other
without distracting from the letters.

 |
For
Borders:
In this example, adding eyelets to the center of the sunflowers
gave dimension and color to the border. Chalking and lining
the flowers completed these beautiful embellishments.
|
 |
For
Journaling:
Using eyelets to create the handyman's belt I was also able
to create a pocket for the journaling. The eyelets became
part of the embellishments and the journaling.
|
| |
With
Punches:
Eyelets make a quick and easy center for any flower. They
can be used to decorate a punched Christmas tree or a punched
stocking. Using colors that compliment the punched shape makes
a great addition to the shape.
|
 |
On
Vellum:
Finding the perfect adhesive to hold down vellum
is no longer a problem. Try laying down stickers on white cardstock,
then placing the title on vellum. Using eyelets you can affix
the title to the page without adhesive showing through.Using
other embellishments with eyelets is another fun thing to do.
The "My Little Shinning Star" page adds floss to the
eyelets and creates blocks for the punches. The flag paper piecing
uses both eyelets and wire.
|
| I
never thought I would enjoy using eyelets. Now I've found adding
eyelets to be so much fun, I am trying to think of new ways
all of the time. Each time you use them, try something different
so you too can open a new door into the scrapbooking realm. |
